Advice on selecting the right school or university for your child Career / work-placement advice

One of the things you probably do before purchasing a house is to seek mortgage advice. You probably look at the “best-buy” tables when thinking about buying a new car or expensive electrical equipment. So why not do the same if you want help in finding the best school to suit your child’s ability? We can assist by offering you expert advice on SATs, Primary Schools, Selective, Independent Schools and much more. Following our face-to-face consultation, we will also compile a detailed and easy to read report which you can look through at your leisure. Save time and money by getting personal guidance to plan your child’s education and boost grades.

Study skills and exam technique

Your child requires at least three months to prepare for an exam, so do not leave the all-important exam preparation until a couple of weeks before the actual exam. The focus of this course is on preparing the student to answer the questions specified in the exam paper under timed conditions. Past exam papers are used and students are coached to concentrate on the areas where examiners award the most points. The thorough preparation we provide will assist your child with overcoming exam stress and the freezing-up that all too often takes place on the day. By the time your child gets to the actual exam she/he will become familiar with the format and what is expected to successfully achieve an A* or A grade.

While your child is having fun learning, The Achievers Point Academy, will closely monitor your child’s progress, all the while adjusting the work to stimulate and promote improved learning. The aim is to gently push your child ahead with the objective, where ever possible of getting your child to work at a higher level than their school age.

We note down areas of difficulty which may arise as your child is stretched by his/her learning. After each session, we’ll take you through what they learned, explaining where they’ve done particularly well, or in which areas extra support was provided.

High- Achievers

Children who are of high ability will be taught based on the National Curriculum, but with no constraint of School Year. All work set will be individually taught at a higher year group level than your child is working on at school.

We can teach to any Exam standard in advance of the Exam Year, so that a child could sit their GCSE, one year early, for example.

If you want your child taught to a certain level above the National Curriculum targets, please advise us at the time of booking, and an appropriate programme of study will be tailored to suit your child. However, we will advise you if your child is unable to cope with the higher level of work and an alternative scheme of work may be suggested.

There is no additional charge required, unless it involves School Entrance requirements which are beyond the content of the National Curriculum.

Is your Child Struggling?

Does your child:

  • Complete homework quickly without finishing some questions or checking work?
  • Worry about trying in case mistakes are made?
  • Skip words or lines or add words which are not there when reading?
  • Easily give up on homework or says they do not understand before reading instructions and having a go?
  • Display shyness or reluctance to put up their hand at school to ask for help or answer questions?
  • Suffer from a lack of confidence and low self-esteem?
  • Struggle to remember Maths rules and concepts?

If the answer to any of the above questions is YES, then The Achievers Point Academy can boost your child’s confidence and to succeed in making progress at school.

How does The Achievers Point Academy teach children who are struggling with Literacy, Numeracy or Science? The Achievers Point Academy needs to know your child’s educational background (and medical history if relevant), so that a programme of study can be tailored that is most appropriate to filling the gaps in your child’s knowledge.

Children, particularly those who are struggling at school, often enjoy the change of environment. As your child is taught individually, no other child will know at what level they are working. This alone, immediately restores confidence in a great many children.

Children are taught sympathetically and rewarded with positive language to motivate and boost confidence. The right materials are provided and tailored by The Achievers Point Academy.

Exam Taught

GCSE, IGCSE and AS / A’ Level English, Maths and Science across all Examination Boards are taught at The Achievers Point Academy.

Past paper practice is an essential part of the way your child is taught when attending The Achievers Point Academy. Practice makes perfect through marking and correcting work. Your child is expected to review any mistakes with the teacher’s help. Correct answers are re-written by students and it is suggested that students memorise corrections to avoid repeating mistakes. Finishing the paper accurately and on-time is an essential part of exam technique practice with timed papers forming an important part of the exam coaching work your child will receive at The

Achievers Point Academy.

For more information please click on a link below or scroll to the appropriate area.

As well as teaching Exam Boards and Papers most-chosen by schools in London and the Southeast, such as the ones listed below, we can also teach any other exam boards you inform us about:

Please provide details as soon as possible of any other exam boards your child may be taking if different from above.

11-Plus Exams: Verbal & Non-verbal Reasoning

The Achievers Point Academy provides children with support for 11-plus exams, which includes Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning together.

Children will receive specific practice for Verbal and/or Non-Verbal Reasoning in the period leading up to the Exams and practice the tests. Verbal and Non-verbal Reasoning practice Tests will be included as part of your booking unless you tell us otherwise.

Private / Independent School Entrance Exams

If you want your child to attend a Private / Independent School with its own Curriculum and Exams, The Achievers Point Academy  can support the Entrance and Exam requirements and can continue to support your child once they have gained a place in the School.

The Achievers Point Academy  has no connection with nor intends specifically to promote any particular School. There are many Private / Independent Schools across London & the Southeast, and some change their Exam on an annual basis.

The Achievers Point Academy  kindly requests that you contact the School(s) of your choice asking for any information that would aid School Entrance. Please forward a copy to The Achievers Point Academy  so that a programme of study can be devised.

If no information is forthcoming from your chosen School, then The Achievers Point Academy  can still tutor your child to a level more appropriate to a child 6 months, or one year older, for example; as long as your child has the ability to cope with the higher level.

SATs Examinations

The Achievers Point Academy  can prepare your child for the SATs Exams with specific teaching based on the content of the Exam.

Depending on your child’s School Year and Ability Level, appropriate Exam Practice Papers will be issued and the cost of providing these is included in your child’s fees.

Children will be encouraged in their understanding of Exam Questions, and both in their accuracy and speed of answering. General Exam Presentation, particularly with Year 6 and 9 English, will also be included.

Tests are given to children at the end of:

  • Year 2 in the Infant School
  • Year 6 in the Junior School
  • Year 9 in the Secondary School

Schools use these Tests for ‘placing’ children when they arrive at the beginning of their Junior or Secondary School. The Tests are also used as a guide for Year 9 children so that teaching staff can place your child in the appropriate class to cope with the GCSE Exams at the correct Level.

GCSE, IGCSE & AS/A’Level Exams

The Achievers Point Academy will help prepare your child for GCSE, IGCSE AS and A ‘ Level Exams throughout Years 10 to 13 (the Exam Years). IGCSE and GCSE Exams are held in the May and June of Year 11 with re-sits taking place the following November or Summer. Based on course-work and exam performance, Grades of A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, G, N are awarded.

A grade ‘C’ is usually the lowest acceptable Grade for most Universities, Colleges and Employers offering ‘Quality’ prospects.

Our teaching and learning philosophy

The Achievers Point Academy adopts a holistic, interactive approach to teaching, facilitating academic as well as emotional and spiritual development. We teach the child, rather than the subject only, focusing on thinking skills, study skills and building self-confidence while they learn.

We begin at the performance level of the child, sometimes doing remedial work to fill in the gaps in academic performance. At other times we stretch gifted children to set greater challenges for themselves.

Much of our material and methodologies come from our sister learning center in the UK. As in our sister center, we teach on the basis of “good, old –fashioned principals” and avoid replacing the fundamental aspects of education with technology. Children still need to be able to question, research, write and make decisions. Our problem-based learning approach is powerful and innovative, resulting in the students developing critical thinking, life-long learning, communication and interpersonal skills.

Our results

Within months, some of our students have received merit awards and have improved their grades significantly. Shy students have come out of their shells and are boisterous, enthusiastic participants in the teaching and learning process.

English

Click on one of the sections below to find out how we will tailor the work to suit your child’s individual requirements.

English is offered to children of abilities, ages and all exams are covered, including:

English Overview

English is by far the most important subject in the national curriculum throughout Primary and Secondary school. English cuts across all school subjects and an excellent standard of spoken and written English is essential.

In fact, The Government says that “Changes are being made in GCSEs so that from 2013 onwards there will be marks awarded for spelling, punctuation and grammar in key subjects. By developing confidence in these skills NOW, children will improve their chances of succeeding in important qualifications later on in their education.”

Here are some of the reasons why the Government expects your child to use a good standard of written English so they can:

  • Understand how to read and interpret Maths word problems, describe Science experiments and produce History essays – to name just a few examples
  • Achieve an A or A* in their GCSEs
  • Explain in the GCSE Maths paper how they arrived at their answer for asterisked questions – this is NEW from 2013 onwards

Primary English for children aged 4 to 7

If your child is aged 4 to 7 or in Reception, Year, 1 or Year 2, then this the best time to teach and practice Phonics so that they have a real grasp of using their sounds to break down and read words. Using a methodical approach to teach Phonics, your child will be shown how to access the opportunities offered by the school curriculum. Your child will be taught how to write words and build sentences. Eventually, your child will be writing short stories. All along, we will teach your child:

  • Proper hand writing formation so that letters and words are correctly written on the line the right way round
  • To get ready to excel in the Year 1 school phonics test
  • How to tackle the Year 2 SATs papers through practice well before the real exam
  • How to pass the 7+ entrance exam for Independent schools

Primary English for children aged 7 to 11

After an initial assessment, we will tailor the work for your child so they are familiar with all aspects of grammar, punctuation and spelling that they need help in. We will also work solidly on developing your child’s story writing, comprehension and inference skills so that they are ready for all the following exams before starting secondary school:

  • SATs Comprehension, Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling tests
  • 11+ Grammar entrance tests

Secondary English for pupils aged 11 to 18

Your child needs to learn how to analyse the “writer’s craft” from Year 7 to Year 11 as part their preparation for the NEW 2017 GCSE English Language and Literature papers. Throughout these years, we teach children how to practice, hone, refine and prefect the skills involved in analysing the “writer’s craft” to achieve a Level 9 (A Star) in the NEW 2017 GCSE English Language and Literature papers. Here are the questions your child needs to ask him or herself and try to answer every time they need to analyse a passage in English, alongside using “PEEL” (POINT, EVIDENCE, EXPLANATION & LINK):

  • What is the author doing when s/he writes?
  • What techniques is the author using?
  • What does the author hope to achieve?
  • What is the purpose of the writing?
  • What is the effect of the writing on the reader?
  • Practicing how to answer essay exam questions in detail on the effect the writer has on the way you think about their work and being able to justify / explain your point of view using the correct literary terminology.

English tuition is provided to help your child cope with the exacting requirements of Secondary school, through to the demands of the GCSE, AS and A’Level curriculum.

The cornerstone of teaching your child is the personal approach – all students get the help they need and school support is a central feature of each lesson. Regular, focused consultation with an expert is an invaluable tool in advancing learning and one which is only available after hours.

The aims of teaching your child is to:

  • Establish and consolidate what s/he has already learnt in English
  • Accelerate progress at a faster pace than would be the case without tuition
  • Work on developing the many different forms of writing your child needs to be familiar with for exam purpose at secondary school, including: persuasive writing, letter writing, poetry, report writing, essays and many more
  • Consolidate critical thinking skills required in analysing, compating, contrasting and explaining ideas
  • Plan and structure essayswhich seamlessly flow from one idea to the next with a proper beginning, middle and an end
  • Prepare for GCSE and A’Level examinations through past paper practice
  • Develop a love of reading which will feed into using improved vocabulary when writing

Teachers at The Achievers Point Academy  are qualified professionals with wide-ranging experience in the provate sector, grammar and state school systems; we teach all major examination boards and the personalised attention your child receives means that s/he will experience tuition that is impossible to achieve in classed of up to 30 students that is common in most schools.

Homework is set each lesson and is marked and returned promptly with development guidance to aid improvement.

Maths

  • Maths is taught to all children from Reception in Primary right up to A’Level when the pupil reaches eighteen years of age.
  • Maths is taught using traditional methods emphasising showing working out for every question without calculators where ever possible.
  • Whatever your child’s age, level or ability, the cornerstone of our Maths teaching approach is exam technique and past paper practicefor SATs, GCSE, AS / A’Level.
  • The only way of building your child’s confidence and Maths skills is by OUR teachers regularly marking your child’s class and homework and showing them how to correct mistakes before moving onto new exercises or topics.
  • Your child will be taught to pass GCSE Maths earlier than Year 11 and to rapidly begin studying AS / A ‘ Level Maths before starting 6th form. (Subject to ability and your child’s secondary school agreeing).

All types of internal school exams and external exam are covered, and all boards are taught, including:

Whether your child is struggling, or is a high-achiever in Mathematics, we teach consistently and devise the most appropriate route to success. This will be taught at a level at which your child will feel comfortable and confident about succeeding.

Primary Maths

It is paramount for primary school children to fully understand the basics in Maths before starting Secondary school which involves a thorough appreciation of number, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and long/short division. Once your child has a good grasp of numeracy skills, it is possible to help them to answer worded problems. Emphasis is placed on showing detailed working out as Year 6 SATs examiners expect to see this if your child is going to reach a good SATs level. Please click here to see SATs levels the government expects your child to reach in Primary and Secondary school. Numeracy is taught through a variety of materials, including: classroom activities, worksheets and textbooks. For younger children, The Achievers Point Academy follows the Numeracy Strategy of the National Curriculum from Years 1 to 6.

Secondary Maths

From Years 7 to 9, teaching is based on materials which will lead to success in GCSE Maths during Years 10 and 11. Built into your child’s Maths learning is exam paper practice so they learn how to answer questions accurately and on time. Exam technique and practice is the cornerstone of our Maths teaching approach.

Following an initial assessment, a dedicated programme of work will be tailored to suit your child’s learning style.

Each child will work at their own level, being given personal targets at which to aim. If your child is hoping to gain a place at a Select School, then The Achievers Point Academy  can structure your child’s work to suit the entrance requirements. There is no limit to the LEVEL which a child may attain as we do not constrain children by their age or school year.

Children in Years 10 and 11 will follow the National Curriculum, unless a parent requires a particular topic to be highlighted. The Achievers Point Academy can adjust work to suit current weaknesses, monthly tests or mock exams.

Past practice papers and tests form the major part of the teaching at The Achievers Point Academy  for children preparing for GCSE, AS, A’Level and Further Maths

Exams

The Maths GCSE exam content is very similar for all boards. Levels are taught at:

  • Foundation up to level ‘C’ grade
  • Higher up to Level ‘A’ / ‘A*’ grades.

Most exams have two papers; some exams have three papers. Usually two variants of the syllabus are taught: ‘A’ and ‘B’ for example.
All variants are based on the English National Curriculum.

Your child will quickly pick-up and understand the different types of questions as they recognise various patterns in Non-Verbal Reasoning shapes and vocabulary in Verbal Reasoning. Approximately 25% of Verbal Reasoning questions involve Maths skills such as substitution, number sequences and the four operations – this will also be taught and your child will practice exercises until they become familiar.

Timing your child to complete past Verbal and Non-Verbal exam papers quickly and accurately is an essential part of the learning process once your child shows confidence in the techniques of Verbal and Non-Verbal exercises

Masterclasses

The Story & Essay Writing Masterclass for Achieving Top Grades.
Suitable for Years 3 to 11.
Taught by qualified Primary & Secondary Teachers.

Saturday 25 November 2017, 3pm drop off to 4:45pm collection (1 ¾ hours)
Venue: The Learning Centre, 1 Oakwood Parade, Bramley Road, London N14 4HY

How can your child become an outstanding A-grade story writer? Does your child struggle with getting started or thinking of ideas? Do they look at you blankly when asked to plan before starting to write?

Fee: £30.

What is the Masterclass about?

The Story Writing Masterclass is about equipping your child to become confident in writing well-structured stories. Story writing for most children is tough with insufficient time spent in schools being shown how to do it. Somehow, schools expect children to be told once and just know how to plan with a beginning, middle and an end.

The Story Writing Masterclass will help your child to gain confidence in producing story after story which will make you and them proud. Whether your child is a beginner or an experienced story writer, practice is the key to becoming fluent at presenting interesting and well organised stories.

By attending, your child will benefit by learning how to:

  • Really improve story writing skills through planning and writing a first and second draft
  • Create interesting stories for the reader by using: connectives, a variety of sentence starters, varying sentence lengths, similes, metaphors and colourful vocabulary
  • Become skilled at self-correcting, editing and checking spelling, grammar and punctuation
  • Produce interesting stories under timed exam conditions and organise creative ideas
  • Construct quality stories from primary through to secondary school

On top of all the above, your child will take away an easy to read FREE story writing guide which they can refer to again and again as well as a model story which can be applied to their own writing.

Children who will benefit from attending:

  • Primary Years 3 to 6
  • Secondary Years 7 to 11
  • Preparing for the 11+ state grammar or private school 11+ & 13+ exams
  • Year 11s taking GCSE English, RE, Geography, History, etc – subjects where examessay writing is compulsory
  • Year 6 expected to produce long and short stories as part of the SATs writing assessments

Attendance is strongly recommended as this is an intensive Masterclass with the emphasis solely on story writing as opposed to grammar and comprehension which is covered in your child’s regular English tutoring sessions.

Booking early is recommended as space is limited and offered on a first-come-first served basis.

Call 01708 741 014 or 07305930748 to pay for your child’s place which is required before the course.
